FAYETTEVILLE – The match-up between Arkansas and Texas Southern Tuesday night at Bud Walton Arena (7 pm tipoff) will e one of the more unique meetings in college basketball this season as Razorback head coach Eric Musselman and Tiger head coach Johnny Jones have both worked for each other.

For the 2014-15 season, Musselman was on Jones’ staff at LSU. Three years later, Jones served on Musselman’s staff at Nevada. The relationships go further, Jones’ son – John Jr. – played for Musselman at Nevada and now plays for father at Texas Southern. Also, TSU staffers Brandon Chambers and Derek Saich were on Musselman’s staff at Nevada with current Razorback staffers Antony Ruta, Michael Musselman and Patrick Ackerman. Finally, current Razorback special assistant to the head coach Hays Myers was a student manager at LSU while Jones was head coach.

Texas Southern Series

  • This will be the seventh meeting between Arkansas and Texas Southern. The Razorbacks have won each of the previous six meetings, the last coming on Dec. 30, 2011 — a 77-49 win in Fayetteville.
  • Arkansas is 4-0 versus the Tigers in Fayetteville and the Razorbacks have wins over TSU in Little Rock and Austin, Texas.

Arkansas’ Defense

  • Arkansas’ defense has been impressive in the season-opening wins, especially the Razorbacks’ 3-point defense.
  • Arkansas held Rice (2-of-25), North Texas (2-of-17) and Montana (2-of-16) to a combined 6-of-58 from 3-point range.

^ Arkansas’ 10.3% 3-point defense ranks 3rd in the NCAA.

  • Arkansas has held opponents to 46 points or less.

^ Arkansas’ 44.0 ppg scoring defense ranks 3rd in the NCAA.

  • Arkansas held Rice to 28.6% shooting overall, North Texas (which missed its first 11 shots) to 33.3% shooting and Montana to 32.1%.

  • Arkansas forced Rice into 27 turnovers, North Texas into 18 and Montana into 23.

^ The 22.67 turnovers forced ranks 8th in the NCAA.

  • Arkansas had 14 steals vs Rice and 11 each versus North Texas and Montana.

^ Arkansas’ 12.0 steals per game ranks 10th in the NCAA.

  • Arkansas sophomore Isaiah Joe was named to the 2020 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today.
