Carter leads Lady'Backs with Three Hits UA Falls

FAYETTEVILLE-In the final home series of her career, senior third baseman Ashley Carter led the University of Arkansas softball team (19-39, 4-21) with three hits against Mississippi (29-28, 9-17) Tuesday, May 3, at Lady’Back Yard. The Lady Razorbacks fell 2-1 and 4-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Arkansas took a 1-0 lead when sophomore second baseman Kallie Foglesong recorded her second hit of the game, a left field, single that scored sophomore right fielder Rachel LeMaster.

Mississippi answered in the top of the fourth inning when senior catcher DeDe Justice hit a two-run home run over the center field wall to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Arkansas softball head coach Jamie Pinkerton said he was disappointed with the team’s showing in the final home stand of the year.

“I thought we came out flat,” Pinkerton said. “We did not perform. Katy Henry had a good outing but she made one mistake.”

Freshman pitcher Katy Henry (7-14) went the distance in the loss recording five strikeouts without allowing a walk.

In the nightcap, the Mississippi offense continued in the first inning when the Rebels took a 3-0 lead on a Justice three-run home run.

The Rebels added another run in the top of the second inning to take a 4-0 lead with two hits and an Arkansas error.

Arkansas scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Carter recorded an infield single that scored junior center fielder Mindy O’Malley.

Freshman pitcher Kelly Ninemire replaced sophomore starting pitcher Sarah Topham (4-7) in the second inning. In six innings of relief work, Ninemire did not allow a run as she finished with two strikeouts.
