Crimson Tide upsets women's tennis 4-3.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 37th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide squeaked past THE No. 28 University of Arkansas Razorback women’s tennis team, 4-3, to begin Southeastern Conference action.
With the match tied at 3-3, freshman Emily Carbone was ahead of Alabama’s Shelley Goodwin, 6-4, and 5-3 in the second set. Unfortunately, Goodwin charged back winning the second-set, 7-5, then went on to claim the third-set, 6-4, clinching the match for the Tide (9-0).
“Full credit to Alabama as they really earned the victory today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “Emily [Carbone] did a great job giving us a chance to win at the end and that was a great performance from a freshman.”
The Hogs (5-3) will travel over to Auburn to face the Tigers on Sunday at noon.
Arkansas claimed the doubles point sweeping through the Tide and taking an early 1-0 lead.
Ela Kaluder, a two-time All-SEC First Team member, stepped her game up in a 6-0, 6-2, win over Paulina Bigos, giving the Razorbacks a two-point cushion.
Alabama bounced back quickly, claiming Court 4 and Court 2 tying the match up. Meritt Emery dropped Nanar Airapetian, 6-3, 6-2, while Courtney McLane upset No. 92 Anouk Tigu, 6-2, 6-1. All-American senior and 10th-ranked, Aurelija Miseviciute, put Arkansas back into the driver’s seat, 7-6, 6-2, over No. 82 Tiffany Welcher.
On Court 6, Taylor Lindsey defeated Kate Lukomskaya, 6-2, 7-5, setting up the three-set clincher by Goodwin.
