Historic Round One In The Books

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former University of Arkansas All-Americans Stacy Lewis and Gabriela Lopez have round one of the 2016 Rio Olympics in the books at the Olympic Golf Course on Wednesday.

Lewis, playing for Team USA, finished the day with a 1-under 35–35—70 while Lopez, playing for Mexico, is in the clubhouse with an even par 36–35—71. They trail leader Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand who opened with a 6-under 65 in round one.

Lewis’ 35 opened with a solid front nine. She bogeyed No. 4 but got the stroke back on No. 9 with the first of two birdies in the round. The Woodlands, Texas, native began the back nine with three consecutive par holes before a bogey on No. 13. Lewis wrapped up her round with a birdie on Nos. 16 and 18 as she fell below par on the first day. She is tied for 19th overall.

Lopez opened her round with back-to-back bogeys but finished the front side strong with six consecutive par holes and a birdie on No. 9. She turned 1-over and would stay there until a bogey on No. 14 moved her to plus-2. -Again Lopez rallied to finish strong with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 for her 36–35—71. She is tied for 26th overall.

The four-day event continues through Saturday with coverage on the Golf Channel and highlights on NBC.
