Hoggard, Winn Named 2019 McWhorter Award Nominees

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -John Winn and Victoria Hoggard of the Razorback men’s and women’s track and field teams have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Arkansas.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2019 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 25.

Highlights of Arkansas’ nominees include:

JOHN WINN, Men’s Track & Field, Arkansas

Major: Kinesiology

  • Student-Athlete Advisory Committee team representative
  • Student-Athlete representative for Arkansas Athletics Administration Meetings
  • Kinesiology major with 3.941 GPA
  • SEC Indoor Bronze Medalist (4×400-meter relay), 2019
  • NCAA Outdoor Qualifier (4×400-meter relay), 2018
  • Bronze medalist at the 91st Texas Relays (DMR), 2018)
  • SEC Indoor Champion (DMR), 2018
  • Holds personal records of: 21.59 (200-meters) & 47.32 (400-meters)
  • Visited elementary schools to play with students and discuss the importance of exercise and living a healthy lifestyle
  • Annually helped run one of the largest high school indoor meets in the country with more than 1,000 participants each yea

  • 5-time USTFCCCA First-Team All-American – NCAA Runner-up indoors in 2018
  • 2-time Outdoor Second-Team All-American
  • SEC Indoor champion (pole vault), 2017
  • 7-time All-SEC
  • Member of six SEC Track & Field team titles (indoor/outdoor)

Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were University of Tennessee football player Parker Henry and LSU volleyball player Kelly Quinn.
