Hogs Defeat EIU In Twin Bill Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 17 University of Arkansas baseball team scored a pair of early runs Monday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader and held on for a 4-1 seven-inning victory over Eastern Illinois at Baum Stadium.

The Arkansas offense did all the damage it would need in the second inning as Bobby Wernes came to the plate with the bases loaded and drilled a two-run single through the left side to plate Chad Spanberger and Rick Nomura and make it 2-0.

After Eastern Illinois scored a run in the sixth, Arkansas came back with two more runs of its own, using a balk to plate Tyler Spoon and Clark Eagan singled home another run to cap the two-run frame.

Dominic Taccolini provided his second quality start in three outings this season, lasting 6.0 innings and giving up just two hits and one run, while striking out four. Jacob Stone came on to close the door in the seventh inning and earn his first save of the season.

Spoon and Nomura extended their hitting streaks to all seven games this season, as Nomura went 2-for-3 and Spoon recorded his team-leading fourth double of the season in the sixth inning.

Arkansas and Eastern Illinois will play the second game of the doubleheader this afternoon at Baum Stadium, before the series finale is scheduled for Tuesday at noon.
