Hogs? Sunday Practice in the Books
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – More than 300 fans turned out to see the Arkansas football team wrap up its first weekend of practice Sunday afternoon on the practice fields located just south of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The players worked on new situations today, including two-minute and special-teams drills. Head coach Houston Nutt saw good things out of the team today and stressed the importance of improving.
“We hit the two-minute drill today for the first time since spring and there was some good carry over but we just have to continue to get better,” Nutt said. “You are seeing some improvement and that is the main reason you come to practice.”
The opening days of practice are a good time for the newcomers to get adjusted to a higher level of play and make impressions on the coaching staff.
“We have some younger guys really stepping up,” Nutt said. “I thought D.J. Williams did a really good job. He got some more reps today and did a good job of catching on and he made some outstanding catches today.”
He also pointed out the good work of secondary players Bret Harris, Isaac Madison and Ramon Broadway. Nutt was also pleased with the young quarterbacks who are experiencing their first preseason camp as Razorbacks.
“We’re throwing a lot at them and their arms look good,” Nutt said. “They just have to keep working because it seems really difficult for them right now because they have the entire playbook. We are going really fast and they don’t have much time to really stop and go through it but they’re doing a good job overall.”
Special teams continued to work on punt and field-goal situations. Along with running players through drills and working on blocking punts, the field goal units had opportunities to get on the field during the two-minute drills.
“Alex Tejada continues to keep that leg very strong,” Nutt said, also pleased with Jeremy Davis and the deep snappers. “The ball is really coming off his foot and he is keeping it accurate, so I have been really proud of him.”
