Jurasic Nabs Weekly Award

BIRMINGHAM Ala. – Coming off a solid performance to open the 2016 campaign, Arkansas women’s tennis sophomore Mia Jurasic has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.

“It’s great to see Mia be recognized as SEC Player of the Week,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “She has made very tangible improvements throughout her college career. Her high standards for herself make her rapid progress no surprise to me.”

First off the court in each match, Jurasic picked up both a singles and doubles win to help propel No. 36 Arkansas to a 6-1 victory over No. 38 Houston on Saturday at Dills Indoor Courts.

Jurasic teamed up with freshman Ana Oparenovic to blank the Houston duo of Rocio Martin and Maria Cardenas 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. The victory increased the Razorback tandem’s winning streak to four matches and moved them to 5-2 overall for the season.

In singles, Jurasic put together a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory against Houston’s Martin at the No. 4 spot. The Ogulin, Croatia, native has won seven of her last 10 matches and is 8-6 overall on the year.

The Razorbacks will travel to Los Angeles for the ITA Division I Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 22-23, which takes place at 15 campus sites. Arkansas will compete against No. 54 Fresno State and either No. 70 UC-Irvine or host No. 9 UCLA. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the 2016 ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Wisconsin from Feb. 5-8.
