Lady'Back linksters go high in the first round

Jump to results FAYETTEVILLE – Cold and windy conditions slowed the ninth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team in first round action at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., Friday. In the final regular season event of the year, Arkansas carded their highest round of the season with a 324. Senior Amanda McCurdy paced the Lady Razorbacks with a four-over 76. Seniors Courtney Mahon and Lindsey Hinshaw each shot 81, followed by sophomore Stacy Lewis with an 86. Senior Sarah Trew finished with an 89 for Arkansas. Although scores were high, McCurdy finds herself tied for 12th overall while the Lady’Backs are tied for 15th in the field of 18. “Obviously, I’m very disappointed,” said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. “We’re a much better golf team than we played today. The conditions were not easy and all of the scores were on the high side. I expect more from this group of kids though and I really think we can come back tomorrow and improve.” Thirteenth-ranked Wake Forest posted the only sub-300 round as windy conditions dominated play in the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic to lead by a stroke. The Demon Deacons fired a 10-over 298 on the par 72 University Golf Course. Sixth-ranked Georgia is second in the 18-team field with a 301 followed by No. 12 Vanderbilt with a 305, No. 48 Florida State at 307, and No. 5 Auburn with a 308 rounding out the top five. Georgia senior Jackie Beers, playing as an individual, leads the field with a three-under 69 after first round action. Play continues with the second and third rounds Saturday and Sunday.
