Lewis and Ingram out at the U.S. Women's Amateur

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas golfers Stacy Lewis and Kristin Ingram battled hot temperatures and even hotter competition in the first round of match play at the 2007 U.S. Women’s Amateur in Carmel, Ind., Wednesday. Lewis opened the first hole 1-up over opponent Margaret Shirley of Roswell, Ga., but gave it back when Shirley birdied the next hole. Shriley caught fire and put Lewis in a difficult position to rally after an unfortunate bogey on the third hole giving Shirley the lead. Shirley birdied the seven going 2-up but Lewis came back to square the match on the 14th hole. Shirley carded a bird on the 15th and Lewis bogeyed the 17th falling 2 and 1 to be eliminated. Ingram faced one of the top players in the nation in Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst falling in dramatic fashion in 19 holes. The contest was square on the first and third holes but Blumenherst took the lead on number four and held the lead until the 17th hole when she bogeyed squaring the match. The players were even on 18 but it was Blumenherst who held on after Ingram bogeyed the final hole. For more information about Arkansas golf, log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
