Mahon continues to advance

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior Courtney Mahon continued to advance with a three-and-one win at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday. Mahon defeated Ashley Tait of Littleton, Colo., in the second round of match play advancing to the next round Friday. The Topeka, Kan., native began the week by finishing in the top 64 after two rounds of stroke play. She defeated Erica Haney two-and-one on Wednesday to reach the round of 32. The duo played the first hole square and Tait took an early lead on the second with a birdie on the par-four, 317-yard hole. It was all square after Tait bogeyed the third hole and then Mahon began to heat up. Mahon went up one after Tait’s second consecutive bogey and followed with a birdie to go up two. Mahon increased her lead on 11 with a birdie to go three up and held the lead through the 17th hole. The three-hole advantage was too much for Tait to overcome. Mahon faces Elizabeth Dotson of White Bluff, Tenn., Friday, at 1:15 p.m., as match play continues. Dotson defeated Kayla Mortellaro two-and-one and advanced by Christi Athas one-up on Thursday.
