Mahon wins a pair of summer titles

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas junior Courtney Mahon has had a busy summer winning a pair of amateur titles on the golf course. Mahon captured the top spot at both the Missouri Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship and won the 2005 Kansas Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship just weeks later. A member of Arkansas’ 11th place NCAA Championship team, Mahon was solid at the Lakewood Oaks Golf and Country Club carding a 218 with rounds of 75-68-75 to win the Missouri title. Her round of 68 earned her the Sue Faurot Award for lowest gross round and she teamed with younger sister Mallory earning the Grand Summit team award as well. Back on the course just two weeks later, Mahon fired rounds of 72-75-76=233 earning Grand Champion honors at the Winfield Country Club in Winfield, Kansas. The victory was Mahon’s second KWGA State title after she posted rounds of 70-70-75 last year. Mahon and the Lady Razorbacks enjoyed their best season of collegiate golf capping off a record-setting year with the program’s first trip to the NCAA Championship. Arkansas broke every record in the record books and Mahon was a big part of the team’s success. The Topeka, Kan., native competed in all 12 of Arkansas’ tournaments and finished the season with a 77.14 stroke average against some of the toughest competition the program has ever faced. Mahon collected three top 25 finishes including tying for 19th at the Central District Invitational. Mahon helped Arkansas to the team’s best finish at the Southeastern Conference Championships with a third-place showing and was a member of the eighth-place NCAA Regional Championship team that earned a trip to the NCAA Championships.
