McCann honored for his service

FAYETTEVILLE – James McCann, member of the No. 12 University of Arkansas baseball team, has been named to the 2010 Southeastern Conference Baseball Community Service Team, as announced Monday by the league office. The SEC sponsors community service teams for all of the league’s 20 teams and highlights a student-athlete from each school who gives back to his community in superior service efforts.

McCann, a sophomore catcher from Santa Barbara, Calif., is an active participant in Arkansas’ Book Hogs and Sweat Hawgs outreach programs. With the Book Hogs, McCann joins other Razorback student-athletes in reading to and encouraging local elementary school students to read more. To engage the youth, McCann and the other student-athletes share their favorite stories and authors with the kids, in addition to reading the story of Rowdy Razorback.

With his involvement in Sweat Hawgs, McCann helps promote and encourage the important of physical fitness to students at local elementary schools. The program reaches out to third, fourth and fifth graders. McCann and the Razorback baseball team have adopted children the past couple years during the holiday season and raised money to provide essential needs and gifts.

McCann is a 2009-10 member of the University of Arkansas’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. On the field this season, he has six home runs and 26 RBI with a .993 fielding percentage behind the plate as the Hogs’ starting catcher. McCann handles an Arkansas pitching staff that is third in the SEC with a 3.88 team ERA.

Arkansas finished the regular season with a 40-16 record and will return to action as the No. 4 seed at the 2010 SEC Tournament which begins Wednesday at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala. In the first round, the Razorbacks will play Vanderbilt in the final game of day one, approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the preceding game.
