McCurdy wins first match at U.S. Women's Amateur

FAYETTEVILLE — Amanda McCurdy led wire-to-wire winning her first round match play event to advance at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Roswell, Ga., Wednesday. McCurdy defeated Lutherville, Md., native Marlowe Boukis four-and-three, going up four holes with three to play. The El Dorado, Ark., native and senior-to-be at Arkansas advances to the second round where she faces Amy Schmucker of Cold Springs, Minn. Schmucker defeated Kasi Lee two-and-one. McCurdy opened stroke play with a four-over 76 but fired a three-under 69 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 10th place and make the 64-athlete cut. The field narrows to 32 Thursday as bracket play continues. McCurdy held the advantage for much of Wednesday’s match up by two before Boukis squared things on the fourth hole. McCurdy rallied winning the fifth hole and never looked back. Boukis was within striking distance until the 13th hole when McCurdy birdied to go up three. She maintained the three-hole advantage on the 14th and took advantage of a bogey by her opponent on the 15th to go up four and put the match out of reach. McCurdy finished as the U.S. Women’s Amateur runner-up last year. For more information about Arkansas golf log on to LADYBACKS.COM.
