No. 10 Gymbacks Set for NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 10 Arkansas gymnastics team is set for the program’s 16th-consecutive appearance at NCAA Regionals with a trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama this weekend.

Arkansas was selected to Session I of the Tuscaloosa Regional, set to begin competition on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Gymbacks will begin the session on bars and advance through the rotations in Olympic order. Joining the Razorbacks in Session I will be 2021 SEC Champions and No. 7 Alabama, No. 19 Iowa and No. 20 Iowa State. In Session II will be No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 23 Missouri and either Eastern Michigan or Maryland, who will compete in a play-in on Thursday afternoon.

Arkansas is back on the road after its last trip to Alabama, where the Razorbacks finished seventh overall at the SEC Championships with a team score of 195.600. Senior Sophia Carter took home a share of the floor title, tying for second with a 9.950, becoming the first Razorback to score a 9.950 on floor at SECs. She helped Arkansas to a 49.425 in the event, good for third among all teams and highest team floor score at SEC Championships in program history.

“Two words come to mind. the first one is reset and the second one is redemption,” said head gymnastics coach Jordyn Wieber when talking about this weekend’s competition. “We obviously weren’t ourselves at SECs so when we got back in the gym, we pushed the refresh button and used that bye-week in the gym to our advantage to get ready for regionals.”

Arkansas last appeared in the 2019 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, placing fifth out of the eight teams after finishing with a final score of 196.175. The Gymbacks’ best team score came in 2013, when the Razorbacks scored a 196.950 at the Corvallis Regional for second place.

The Gymbacks have taken home regional titles twice in program history. In 2009, Arkansas hosted its second-ever regional and placed first with a score of 196.300, outscoring No. 4 Stanford (196.200) for the crown. Just two years later, Arkansas traveled west for the Denver Regional and took first place as the No. 12 seed with a final score of 196.550.

“The team is excited to get back out there, I know I’m excited to get back out there,” said Wieber. “It’s going to be a challenging meet, but I love a challenge and the team does too.”

For the first time in ESPN history, all four NCAA regional competitions will be available live on ESPN3 with coverage of every gymnast and apparatus. Live scoring for both Friday and Saturday’s competitions are available on Arkansas’ schedule page, here.
