Overstreet Captures First Collegiate Victory

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – After four top 10 finishes in his last five starts, sophomore Mason Overstreet broke through with his first collegiate victory on Tuesday at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Country Club.

Playing the best golf of his career, Overstreet opened the event with back-to-back 5-under 65’s and posted an even par 70 on Tuesday to finish deadlocked with UNLV’s Shintaro Ben as the duo shared medalist honors. Overstreet adds a victory to a pair of second-place finishes after a runner-up performance last season at the NCAA National Championship, followed by a near win at the Gopher Invitational earlier this year.

Through four tournaments this fall, the Kingfisher, Oklahoma, native is a combined 29-under par and has a stroke average of 68.5, good for 10th in the country and one of two underclassmen in the nation with a stroke average below 69.0.

As a team, No. 16 Arkansas recorded its third-lowest round in program history on Monday and came back with a 7-over 287 on Tuesday during the final round to finish fifth overall at 286-269-287 – 842 (+2). The Razorbacks improved their head-to-head record to 34-10 on the year.

Alvaro Ortiz and Luis Garza both carded 2-over 72’s on Tuesday and Dylan Naidoo added a 3-over 73. Ortiz finished T-27th overall at 4-over, while Garza was T-31st overall at 5-over. William Buhl rounded out the top 40 in the field at 8-over and Naidoo was alone in 53rd place.

Overstreet led the tournament in par four scoring at 15-under, and finished second in birdies (15) and eagles (2). As a team, Arkansas ranked third in the field in par four scoring (-6), total birdies (51) and eagles (3).

Arkansas returns to action in two weeks at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas, Texas, for its final tournament of the fall season.
