Perico and Ernst Honored by SEC

FAYETTEVILLE – Julian Perico headlined a group of three Arkansas men’s golfers honored by the SEC, it was announced today.

Perico was selected to the SEC All-Freshman team, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Landon Ernst was named to the SEC Community Service Team. Mason Overstreet was tabbed the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award that was announced and presented last month at the SEC Championships.

Perico is the eighth Razorback to be named to the SEC All-Freshman team in the 13-year tenure of head coach Brad McMakin. The Lima, Peru native led Arkansas in virtually every category including scoring average (71.34), birdies (126), top five finishes (3), top 10’s (5), low rounds (16) and being the low man at a tournament (5).

His scoring average currently ranks fourth on the school’s single-season list and is a Razorback freshman record. (The previous Arkansas freshman record was 71.79 – now 12th on the school’s seasonal list – by Sebastian Cappelen in 2010-11.) Perico set two more school records with a score of 129 through 36 holes and 197 over 54 en route to winning the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate last fall.

Perico led the Razorbacks and tied for sixth at the NCAA Austin Regional earlier this week to qualify for the NCAA Championship, hosted by Arkansas at Blessing Golf Club.

Ernst, a sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, was named to the SEC Community Service Team for his work as a member of Arkansas’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has participated in Shop with the Razorbacks, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Tri Delta Charity Golf Scramble and Fearless Food Fight-Pack Shack.

Overstreet owns a 3.917 cumulative GPA and is majoring in finance with an emphasis on financial management/investment. The Kingfisher, Okla., native has earned Dean’s List in all of six of his semesters at Arkansas and made just two B’s in his collegiate career. He was recognized by the SEC as a freshman on the First-Year Academic Honor Roll and again last season on the Spring Academic Honor Roll.
