Razorback Tennis Signs Student-Athlete

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team announced the addition of Matthew Walters who signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Razorbacks in the fall of 2008.

Walters, a three-time state champion at Valley View High School, is the No.-1 ranked junior in Arkansas and 12th in the southern section. In 2007, he won five United States Tennis Association tournaments, including level-three events in Little Rock and Jackson, Miss.

“We are obviously very excited to have an in-state player the caliber of Matt joining the Razorback family,” head coach Robert Cox said. “He is a talented young man who will be a tremendous addition to Arkansas tennis and should transition well from junior to Division I tennis.”

The Jonesboro, Ark., native has played in several national tournaments, including the National Clay Court and Hard Court championships in Boca Raton, Fla., and Kalamazoo, Mich., respectively. Walters has won five matches over the past two years at the event in Kalamazoo.

In the classroom, Walters maintains a 3.6 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is also an active member of the community serving in volunteer roles with youth tennis clinics and church activities.
