Shean leads Razorbacks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — University of Arkansas senior Kelli Shean posted her third consecutive top 20 finish tying for 20th at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, Tenn., Sunday. Shean, a Cape Town, South Africa, native finished with a final round 76 for a 224 with rounds of 73-75-76 in windy, rain-soaked conditions at Fox Den Country Club. Sophomore Katy Nugent and seniors Alex Schulte and Kristin Ingram all posted final round 77s for Arkansas on Sunday. Nugent finished tied for 55th with 231 scoring 76-78-77 for the three-day event. Schulte tied for 62nd overall with a 17-over 233 with rounds of 76-80-77 while Ingram finished at 234 scoring 79-78-77, improving with each round. Freshman Victoria Vela cracked the lineup for the first time this season. Vela finished tied for 80th overall with a 238 with rounds of 79-78-81. Corinna Rees competed as an individual this week and tied for 29th overall. Rees counted 77-73-77 for a 227 in Knoxville. As a team, the Razorbacks finished 14th overall in the 18-team field. Arkansas opened with a 304 followed by 309-307 for 920 overall. The Razorbacks finished one-stroke better than ninth-ranked Ohio State at 921 and was eight better than No. 32 Furman with 937. Kentucky (937) and UTSA (948) were 17th and 18th, respectively. Host and No. 18 Tennessee won the tournament leading wire-to-wire with a four-over 868. They were 19 strokes better than second-place No. 22 Louisville with 887. The rest of the top five included No. 24 South Carolina with 889, No. 43 Kent State with 897 and No. 19 Wake Forest with 899. The rest of the field included No. 36 TCU in sixth with 900, No. 12 Florida in seventh at 902, No. 17 UT-Chattanooga in eighth with 907, No. 50 Notre Dame in ninth with 908 and Ole Miss in 10th with 909. North Carolina State tied seventh-ranked LSU for 11th overall with 910 followed by No. 20 Tulane in 13th with 913, just seven strokes ahead of Arkansas in 14th place. “These are the kinds of events you learn a lot about yourself and the team,” said Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor. “It was tough and we made some mistakes but I also saw a lot of good things out there. We talked a lot about having the confidence and the belief that we can win every tournament we play and we’re still working on building that mindset. “We’re coming home to regroup a bit before we head to Las Vegas,” Estes-Taylor continued. “We have a few things to work on but we’re already looking forward to getting back out in competition.” The Razorbacks wrap up the fall Oct. 26-28, at the Las Vegas Showdown. The team breaks for the winter returning to the golf course Feb. 22-23, at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla.
