Small fast greens hamper Lady'Back linksters
Jump to agate FAYETTEVILLE – The eighth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team fired a first round 309 and is in ninth place at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., Monday. Arkansas, in its first action of the spring season carded a 25-over 309 as the Lady’Backs struggled on the greens. “We struggled today,” said Arkansas head coach Kelley Hester. “The greens were very small and very fast and we didn’t adjust well early. Amanda (McCurdy) birdied her last three holes coming and Ashley had a really great start. She struggled a bit on the second nine but I think she learned a lot about her game. I definitely think we can play better and that’s what we’re shooting for tomorrow.” Arkansas was led by senior Amanda McCurdy who opened with a 75 and is tied for 15th overall. McCurdy’s round was plagued by a pair of double bogies and three bogies but the El Dorado, Ark., native rallied coming in with the 75. Three Lady’Backs are tied for 40th overall with round of 78. Senior Lindsay Hinshaw and sophomore Stacy Lewis and Ashley Medders hold that spot while senior Courtney Mahon is tied for 56th with an 80. Ninth-ranked Arizona State leads the talented field with a 293, three strokes better than No. 7 Southern California and No. 20 California, both of whom are tied for second. Second-ranked UCLA lurks in fourth place and is tied with No 11 Wake Forest with 301 while No. 33 Oklahoma State is sixth with a 304. No. 25 Florida and No. 16 Stanford are tied for seventh with 305 followed by No. 9 Arkansas with a 309. Pepperdine, ranked fifth, is 10th with 311, followed by No. 18 Arizona with 312, No. 15 Washington with 312, No. 19 Ohio State with 314 and No. 23 New Mexico with a 323. Play continues through Wednesday at the par 71, 5,912 yard course.
