Soccer hosts Adidas Classic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas soccer team will make its season home debut by hosting the Razorback Adidas Classic. Arkansas will take the field Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. to face Air Force. The two-day event also features teams from Austin Peay and Missouri State. Arkansas (1-0) enters its home opener after a 2-0 victory over Michigan in its season opener last weekend. Friday’s contest with Air Force will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Razorbacks will play Missouri State in Sunday’s weekend finale at 1:30 p.m. In the Classic’s other matches, Missouri State will play Austin Peay at 4:30 p.m. in Friday’s first match, while Air Force and Austin Peay will face off in Sunday’s first match at 11 a.m.Kailey Anders and Chelsea Tidwell each scored a goal in Arkansas’ season opener and through the first weekend of the 2009 season, the two are tied for third in the Southeastern Conference in scoring. Laurel Pastor picked up the game’s lone assist, a helper on Tidwell’s goal in the 78th minute against Michigan.Anders started the week being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against Michigan when league weekly awards were announced Monday. The honors continued for the sophomore defender Tuesday when she was selected to the Soccer America Women’s Team of the Week, the first Arkansas soccer student-athlete to be named to the publication’s weekly team.Behind the backline, Kendal Winston and Britni Williams combined to shutout the Wolverines with Winston making her first career start. She made three saves in the first half, while Williams came in to preserve the shutout with two stops of her own.Air Force (0-1-1) comes into the weekend off a double-overtime tie with UCCS in its last outing. Sophomore midfielder/defender Ashley Sikora leads the Falcons with one goal. Goalkeeper Charity Blanton carries a 0.90 goals against average through two contests.Sunday’s opponent, Missouri State (0-1) lost its season opener, a 3-0 setback, to Oklahoma. The Bears were 10-7-2 last season and return five All-Missouri Valley Conference performers, including 2008 leading scorer Samantha Aguilar.Promotional giveaways during the weekend include team posters and seat cushions, and halftime will feature the Grandpa’s Oven "Shoot for Dough" contest.
