Michael Johnson, PhD

Dr. Mike Johnson has been a licensed psychologist since 2008 and serves as the Director of Clinical and Sport Psychology after joining the University of Arkansas Athletic Department in September 2013. Dr. Johnson oversees all aspects of clinical mental health services for Razorback student-athletes. In addition, Dr. Johnson coordinates with other departments to make sure that the student-athletes receive the best mental health treatment possible.

Prior to joining Arkansas, Dr. Johnson spent a year at Kansas State University serving in the same role. Dr. Johnson’s other post-doctoral experience includes working more than six years as a professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Georgia Highlands College and the University of Texas-Pan American.

Before becoming a professor of psychology, Dr. Johnson worked as a financial planner for a National Trade Association and as a senior budget analyst for Fairfax County (Virginia) Public Schools. Dr. Johnson had a diverse array of professional opportunities before and during graduate school including directing a year-round club swim team for 10 years where he oversaw all aspects of the organization and coached youth swimming for 16 years.

Dr. Johnson attended Brown University, where he was a four-year letter winner in swimming and received his degree in economics. He attended Florida State University where he received his masters in Education Psychology (Sport Psychology major) and his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and School Psychology.

Dr. Johnson’s specialty is in Sport Psychology. He has published multiple articles and book chapters and is an Ad hoc Reviewer. Dr. Johnson is currently a member of the American Psychological Association and Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
