Vinson earns Freshman of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE – Matt Vinson has been selected the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. The Alma, Ark., native capped his week with a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday to send the Razorbacks to a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Vinson’s home run against the Panthers was the first of his collegiate career. All three of his hits during the week went for extra bases-Sunday’s home run and a pair triples. In the midweek finale against South Dakota State, Vinson hit a bases-clearing triple as part of the Hogs’ 10-run eighth inning. He finished the game with a career-best four RBI. The triple against SDSU was the first hit of his Razorback career.

In addition to his big hits, Vinson scored at least one run in each of Arkansas’ games this week. He tied for the week’s lead with eight runs scored. The freshman outfielder also led the team during the week with six walks, a .526 on-base percentage and a .909 slugging percentage. He also had two stolen bases. Vinson started four of the five games for the Razorback last week.

Vinson is the first Freshman of the Week winner for Arkansas since Collin Kuhn earned the honor a year ago this week (March 16, 2009).

The Razorbacks begin SEC play this weekend with a three-game series at defending national champion LSU. The conference-opening series will be played at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
