Mission of the Office of Student-Athlete Success:

The Office of Student-Athlete Success empowers individuals through holistic programming, to grow as students, athletes, and leaders by fostering an environment of integrity, diversity, and achievement.

 

The Jerry & Gene Jones Family Student-Athlete Success Center addresses the academic, nutritional, personal and professional development of more than 460 student-athletes, creating an integrated academic support program focused on graduation of all student-athletes at the University of Arkansas.

Academic Services

What We Offer

There are eight full-time Academic Counselors and seven Academic Counselor Graduate Assistants committed to helping students reach their academic goals. This is one of the largest staffs in the nation serving in the academic support area. Each Academic Counselor is charged with helping students master certain skills that ultimately result in graduation and aspiring to achieve a personal best.

Academic Counselors:

  • Work with specific teams and serve as the liaison between professors and coaches
  • Assist with time management skills, personal responsibility, and direct student-athletes to various campus resources
  • Mold student-athletes’ schedules to fit NCAA requirements while balancing athletic obligations
  • Work closely with the Eligibility Coordinator to ensure students are working toward completing a degree as well as maintaining eligibility
  • Correspond with faculty/professors regarding class absences due to competitions, sickness, etc.

 

Education Enrichment Services (EES):

  • Encourages skill building, accommodation management, and academic assistance in conjunction with individual needs
  • Learning specialists work one-on-one with student-athletes during weekly meetings
  • The Director of Educational Enrichment Services coordinates with the Academic Counselors to screen and work with student-athletes that may benefit from these services
  • Liaison to Center for Educational Access (CEA)
  • Assistive technologies include: “Read and Write Gold,” “Wunderlist” and “Live Scribe Pens”
  • H.O.G. Hall / Team study halls: Objective-based study hall where students work with specialized learning assistants at a ratio of no more than 3:1 in order to help students prepare effectively for their classes each week

Tutoring:

  • CRLA certified program
  • Full-time Tutor Coordinator on staff who hires, trains, and evaluates each tutor
  • Tutoring appointments are one-on-one sessions that can be scheduled on a one-time or reoccurring basis (group sessions are available upon request)
    • Skype tutoring is available
  • Over 100 tutors on staff
    • 3.0 GPA required along with 4 hours of professionalization training each term
    • Must receive recommendations from faculty and staff
    • Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students

Tutors’ work hours are flexible, but they are based on a student-need, which varies from semester to semester. Tutors are paid $13 per hour for those working on their undergraduate degree and $15 per hour for those who have completed an undergraduate degree. Tutors are evaluated at the end of each semester to determine continued employment.

You should apply if you…

  • Have earned at least 30 credit hours
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Earned a B (A preferred) in the classes you wish to tutor
  • Are available at least two evenings each week to tutor (Sunday – Thursday)
  • Can provide 2 letters of recommendation, one of which must be a university faculty/staff reference who can speak to their knowledge and capacity to tutor

Student-Athlete Graduation Ceremony

 

The ultimate accomplishment for student-athletes is earning their degree. Each fall and spring during the Student-Athlete Graduation Ceremony, our graduating student-athletes receive graduation stoles to wear during commencement ceremonies and graduation plaques to display their diplomas after degrees are confirmed.
