Arkansas Inks In-State Talent To NLI

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas men’s golf head coach Brad McMakin announced Thursday that Jonesboro High School standout Wil Gibson has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Razorbacks in 2018-19.

Ranked No. 129 by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard, Gibson will remain in the state of Arkansas where he captured back-to-back 6A Individual State Championships in 2015 and 2016. He finished runner-up in the state as a freshman in 2014 and was named the 2015 Wendy’s Arkansas High School Golfer of the Year.

“Wil is a back-to-back state champion in Arkansas and we are thrilled that he chose to stay in state and play for the Razorbacks,” said McMakin. “We look forward to having him on campus and joining our program next year.”

He finished runner-up at the 2016 ASGA High School Overall Tournament and is a three-time ASGA High School Overall Tournament qualifier. Gibson is a four-time All-State golfer and a three-time 6A East Conference Medalist. He was a member of four state championship teams and helped lead his high school team to a 183-3 match record in four years.

The Jonesboro, Arkansas, native qualified for the 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur where he advanced out of stroke play into the match play portion of the event. He won the AJGA Junior All-Star at Lost Springs and posted a top-10 finish at the AJGA Rome Junior Classic. Gibson is also a four-time ASGA Tournament Champion, a three-time USJGT Tournament Champion and won the USJGT Director’s Award for excellent play and sportsmanship.
