Doubles Duo in Quarterfinals as Razorbacks Claim Three Wins on Day One in Midland
MIDLAND, Texas – The Arkansas men’s tennis team opened their fall slate with three wins on the first day of the Racquet Club 14K Prize Money Event. Alan Sau Franco and Jared Horwood advanced to the Quarterfinals of the doubles draw while Melvin Manuel and Benedikt Emesz secured one singles win each.
The pairing of Sau Franco and Horwood took on Texas A&M’s duo of Grant Lothringer and Ritesh Patil, pulling out a narrow 9-8 (7), victory to clinch their spot in the Quarterfinals of the doubles draw. They will face Nathan Han and Justin Schlageter from Oklahoma in the next round.
Melvin Manuel and Benedikt Emesz were victorious for Arkansas in their Round of 32 singles matches. Manuel won the first set close but pulled away in the second to defeat Patil 7-5, 6-3, in the opening round. Manuel dropped his second match of the day to Chen Dong of LSU after a hard-fought second set, falling 4-6, 6-7 (0).
Emesz took on A&M’s Matthis Ross in his first match, coming out with a gritty, three-set win by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Emesz came up just short in his Round of 16 match against Texas Tech’s Tyler Stewart, falling 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 3-6.
Manuel and Emesz will play tomorrow in the Quarterfinals of the silver draw at 8:30 a.m. CT.
Sau Franco and Horwood dropped their two singles matches on the day and will compete tomorrow in the Semifinals of the bronze draw after advancing due to their opponents withdrawing.
The duo of Manuel and Emesz fell short in their opening round match of the doubles draw to Boise State’s James Van Herzeele and Caden Moortgat, falling 3-8.
