Hogs One Behind Lead; Jose Marin in Second at Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The No. 27 Arkansas women’s golf team was able to get the 2023-24 season off to a hot start in the first round of the Carmel Cup at the prestigious Pebble Beach Golf Links, as the Hogs sit in second place with a 7-under 353. In a six-count-five format, the five Hogs counting toward the round one score was at par or better in the first 18 holes.

As one of two teams to shoot under par on the day, Arkansas is just one stroke behind No. 1 Stanford, who is 8-under par. In a three-way tie for third, SEC foes Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are 11 strokes behind the Hogs at 4-over. Freshman Maria José Marin, who was named a Preseason All-America Third Team choice by the Golf Channel on Friday, paced the Hogs in her first round of collegiate golf with a 5-under 67.

José Marin was solid all day long with a bogeyless round with five birdies in her collegiate debut. Her 67 is the lowest score tallied by a Hog since Kajal Mistry’s 67 at the 2022 MountainView Collegiate. The Cali, Colombia product is one stroke behind the leader, Stanford’s Megha Ganne, who shot a 66 on Friday, as well as one of four golfers to shoot in the 60s in the first round.

Veterans Miriam Ayora and Mistry are in a tie for 10th after both tallying a 1-under 71 in 18 holes. Ayora was 2-over par through the front nine, but logged four birdies and one bogey in the back nine to finish under par. Mistry was 1-under after her front nine, but a double bogey on hole 10 put her over. With birdies on holes 14 and 18, Mistry was able to finish under par.

Julia Gregg and Reagan Zibilski both finished the day with an even-par 72 to both count toward the Hog’s round one score. Gregg had three birdies, one bogey and one double bogey, while Zibilski had one birdie and one bogey with 16 pars to finish at par. The duo is in a tie for 13th. Ela Anacona shot a 6-over 78 on day one and sits in a tie for 40th.

The Hogs’ adjusted score is 282.4 (353 x 0.80), which is lower than any round the Hogs played last season.
