Hogs T5 After 36 Holes at SEC Championship
BELLEAIR, Fla. –No. 6 Arkansas women’s golf shot a 2-under 278 for the second day in a row and rose one spot to T5 on the SEC Championship leaderboard in Saturday’s second round.
The Hogs will need a top eight finish in Sunday’s final round of stroke play to advance to match play on Monday. Texas leads the field at 10-under and the projected cut line sits at 1-under.
Maria Jose Marin tied Tennessee’s Kyra Van Kan for the lowest round of the day with a 5-under 65. Marin bounced back after a 3-over start to Friday’s first round and birdied her first two holes, Nos. 10 and 11. She closed out her first nine with a pair of birdies on Nos. 17 and 18, thanks to approach shots within a few feet of the pins. Her fifth birdie came on No. 1, her tenth hole of the day. She parred the remaining eight holes and finished bogey-free.
All five of her birdies came on par-4 holes.
Reagan Zibilski and Sara Brentcheneff each shot 1-over 71s. Zibilski was even with a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys, but dropped a shot on the par-4 second hole that played as the most difficult on Saturday.
Brentcheneff experienced a roller coaster of a round, with an over-par finish despite four birdies. The freshman suffered a double bogey on No. 2 but bounced back with a birdie on the par-3 third hole. She was even four holes left and hit her shot of the day with her approach on No. 6 to within a few feet of the hole to go 1-under. Brentcheneff suffered back-to-back birdies to close out her round and fall to T18.
Arkansas was 5-under on the day and 7-under total and tied for second after junior Abbey Schutte birdied No. 7 but finished 3-over on the final two holes to drop to 2-under and T5.
Schutte bounced back with a 1-0ver 71 after a 10-over 80 in the opening round. Freshman Swetha Sathish, who counted a 72 on Friday in the fifth spot, suffered an 80 on Saturday.
