Razorbacks 1-1 In Match Play At The Liz

ATHENS, Ga. – Co-medalist Brooke Matthews won two matches helping the sixth-ranked University of Arkansas women’s golf team to a 1-1 day in match play action at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia, on Friday.

Matthews fired a career-best 68 in the single round of stroke play earning her first win (a tie) on Thursday. She was one of three Razorbacks who won their first round matches and was the only Arkansas player to win in the second match.

The Razorbacks move on to face Georgia for third place on Saturday.

After finishing T-4th in stroke play, Arkansas earned the No. 4 seed by virtue of the tie-breaker. That pitted the Razorbacks against Louisville, the 5-seed, in their first match of the day. Matthews, Ximena Gonzalez and Maria Hoyos all picked up victories leading Arkansas to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals.

Gonzalez won big, 6&4, opening with back-to-back victories on her first two holes. The match was as close as a 3-hole lead twice but her Cardinal opponent could never make up any ground. Hoyos won 5&4 and Matthews picked up a 3&1 win to clinch the Razorback victory.

The Razorbacks moved on facing top-seeded Augusta dropping the second match, 4-1-0. Matthews again never trailed in the contest extending the lead to as much as three holes before winning 2-up.

From Shauna Taylor
The morning matches went well. Our younger players did a great job getting the three points for us. Then we moved to the afternoon and, obviously we lost the match, but I feel like we are walking away with a lot of good things as we head into postseason play. We are getting our younger players more experience and we just need to work on course management and tidying up some little things. I’m disappointed in not winning but I’m excited for tomorrow. I feel like we have a really good draw against Georgia on their home course. I played at Georgia and I get pretty excited to have our golf team go up against them. We are looking to continue taking steps forward as we head into SEC play. I’m really proud of Brooke. She was co-medalist and won her two matches today. It says a lot about where her game is right now.
