Razorbacks Drop Tight 4-3 Decision to No. 25 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C.  – The Arkansas women’s tennis team fell short of a comeback in a 4-3 loss to No. 25 South Carolina. The Razorbacks move to 9-9 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

The Gamecocks got off to a quick start, taking the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. It was Arkansas who struck first with Grace O’Donnell and Lenka Stara grabbing a 6-2 win over South Carolina’s Mulville/Otis. The Gamecocks responded with No. 70 Akli/Hamner taking 6-3 win over Arkansas’ No. 23 Spink/Cross. The doubles point came down to a court three tiebreaker with South Carolina clinching the point 7-6 over Kelly Keller and Carolina Gomez Alonso.

South Carolina extended its lead early in singles with No. 6 Ayana Akli defeated Arkansas’ Kelly Keller 0-6, 0-6 on court one, but Kacie Harvey responded on court six with a 6-1, 6-1 to put the Razorbacks on the board. The Gamecocks took a win on court four to go up 3-1, but Indianna Spink put the Hogs one point close with a 6-0, 0-6, 6-1 win on court three.

The match would come down to courts two and five with Carolina Gomez Alonso and Morgan Cross both in third sets. On court two, Gomez Alonso evened the score with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 16 Sarah Hamner with court five to now decide the match. The Gamecocks were able to clinch the victory with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Morgan Cross on court five.

The Razorbacks are back on the courts on Sunday, April 2 facing the No. 16 Florida Gators at noon in Gainesville, Fla.
