Recap: Southern Intercollegiate Championships
ATHENS, GA. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team competed in the 48th Annual Southern Intercollegiate last weekend at the Dan Macgill Tennis Complex. Junior Jose Salazar fought long and hard and went on to compete in the Division I Singles Quarterfinals. Juan Marino and his doubles partner, Santiago Munoz, competed in the semi-finals yesterday morning.
“It was a fine start for us.” Head coach Andy Jackson said. “The fall is about preparation for the spring season. We were able to play a lot of matches which is great for our program. Our doubles, with three teams in the quarterfinals was very encouraging. Also, Jose’s play in singles and doubles was a highlight of the weekend. We are going to be more competitive in the SEC and we are excited to continue to make progress.”
Juniors Jose Salazar and Juan Marino advanced from the round of 64 to the round of 32 on Friday. Salazar defeated Michael Kay from Georgia Tech in three sets advancing him to the round of 32. In just two matches, Salazar defeated Rogerio Ribeiro from East Tennessee State 6-3, 6-4. Marino came out strong and defeated both opponents in two matches. Marino defeated Fabian Pronni from Barry 6-3, 6-3 and Elijah Melendez from Georgia Tech 6-1, 6-4. Salazar went on to compete in the Division II Singles Quarterfinals on Sunday and lost in two matches against Kevin Konfederak from Georgia Gwinnett 7-6, 6-3.
David Herrerias and Jose Salazar, Giammarco Micolani and Austin Robles, and William Albanese and Johan den Toom received first-round byes and competed Saturday.
On Saturday, the Razorbacks won five out of the six doubles matches. Herrerias and Salazar and Giammarco Micolani and Austin Robles won in the Division I Doubles Round 32 to advance to Round 16. Both doubles teams won their match in Round 16 to advance to the Division 1 Doubles Quarterfinals held on Sunday.
In the Division I Doubles Quarterfinals, Herrerias and Salazar fought hard, but lost to the number one seed, Austin Smith and Ben Wagland from Georgia. Micolani and Robles were beat by Robert Dudley and Luke Johnson from Clemson in the Division I Doubles Quarterfinals.
The finals for Divisions I and II are slated for this morning and afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
