Strong Finish For WGolf At The Moon Invite

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Three Razorbacks finished below or even-par helping the No. 6 University of Arkansas women’s golf team move up in the final round of the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Fla., Tuesday.

Arkansas finished with its best round of the three-day spring opener shooting a 288 (296-294-288=878) to finish in ninth place. The Razorbacks improved with each round and finished the stacked tournament among the top two teams for eagles and in the top five for par scores.

Junior Julia Gregg paced Arkansas and finished in a tie for 23rd overall counting a 219 (72-74-73). Gregg excelled on the long holes playing the par-5s 3-under for the event, ranking among the tournament leaders. One of just two players who have competed in every round this season, Gregg posted 12 birdies in three days.

Sophomore Cory Lopez was one shot back shooting 220 (74-74-72) tying for 26th overall. The sophomore finished the tournament tied for second, playing the par-3 holes 1-under. Lopez recorded 41 pars in three rounds, tying for the second-most at the event.

Junior Kajal Mistry finished tied for 37th shooting a 221 (77-72-72). Mistry counted 39 par holes and played the final four 1-under to finish strong for Arkansas. Sophomore Miriam Ayora saved her best for last with a final round 71 to tie for 50th overall shooting 223 (78-74-71). Freshman Giovanna Fernandez rounded out the Razorback team scores. Playing in her first collegiate event, Fernandez finished tied for 74th overall.

Playing as an individual, freshman Ffion Tynan finished strong with an even-par 72 to tie for 44th overall shooting 222 (80-70-72).

Florida State went wire-to-wire winning the event with a 10-under 854, six shots better than No. 8 Virginia who was second shooting 860. The rest of the top-5 included No. 21 LSU in third with 861, No. 9 Alabama with 862 and No. 30 UCF shooting 863. The SEC-heavy field also included No. 7 Florida in sixth place with 870, while No. 17 Auburn and No. 3 South Carolina finished tied for 8th overall at 871, just ahead of Arkansas.

The Razorbacks won’t waste any time getting back out on the links as they travel to the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Hilton Head, S.C., Feb. 28-March 2. It is the second of four spring tournaments prior to beginning postseason play.
