Sweeney, Smillie Quarterfinals Bound as Doubles Reach Semifinals in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. – The Razorback men’s tennis fall season got off to a hot start in Kansas at the Wichita State 5K Fall UTR. Multiple players shined throughout the day, including Jake Sweeney and Connor Smillie clinching their spots in the Quarterfinals of the singles main draw. The duo of Sweeney and Jakob Mosvold advanced to the Semifinals of the doubles draw after capturing two consecutive victories.

Jake Sweeney cruised in his opening round match, taking down Pablo Rodriguez Gonzalez of Southwestern College (KS). He then matched up against the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, Kristof Minarik, in the Round of 16. Sweeney pulled off a crucial straight-set victory, upsetting Minarik 7-6 (7), 6-3, to advance to the Quarterfinals.

Freshman Connor Smillie also dominated in his Round of 32 match as he defeated Eloi Riva in straight sets. Smillie clinched his spot in the Quarterfinals after capturing a 6-2, 7-6 (4), victory over No. 7 Alexander Richards. 

Sweeney will face No. 8 Bruno Nhavene from Cowley College (KS) while Smillie matches up against No. 4 Alejandro Jacome of Wichita State. Both matches are set to start at 10 a.m. CT. 

Sweeney teamed up with Jakob Mosvold in doubles play and earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament. In their opening match, the duo swept Julian Toloza and Jhoel Quiñonez, 6-0. The pair secured their spot in the Semifinals after taking down Hodzic/King of Wichita State, 7-5. Sweeney/Mosvold are set to face No. 3 Alexander Richards/Zachary Grueber.

In the singles main draw, Mosvold came back to win after losing the first to advance to the second round. He then faced off against No. 6 Mykhailo Kvantaliani where he was defeated 2-6, 3-6. 

Stefanos Savva earned the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament, but couldn’t escape his match with a win as he was narrowly defeated 6-1, 6-7 (5), 0-1 (8). Savva will face Federico Poi in the Quarterfinals of the singles back draw at 10:30 a.m. CT.
