Neighbors' Former Player Kelsey Plum Is Top WNBA Pick
NEW YORK – Kelsey Plum, who Mike Neighbors recruited and coached for four seasons at the University of Washington, was selected by the San Antonio Stars with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft on Thursday, April 13 in New York City.
How it began…
In the spring of 2013 then Washington head coach Kevin McGuff accepted the head coaching job at Ohio State — leaving Husky signee Kelsey Plum with a decision to make. Plum was released from her national letter of intent and her recruitment was essentially opened back up. On April 16, 2013 Plum sent a text to Neighbors, who had been recruiting her all along. “You stay, I stay” read the message that Neighbors now has framed in his office. On April 21, 2013 Neighbors was named the head coach at Washington and the duo began the best four-year stretch in program history.
