Facility Record Highlights Weekend At Baylor
WACO, Texas – A windy yet warm Saturday in Waco laid the foundation for the No. 5 Arkansas men’s track and field team to pick up some NCAA West Preliminary round qualifying marks at the Baylor Invitational.
Arkansas’ greatest triumph of the meet came earlier in the day as Roy Ejiakuekwu, Kemar Mowatt, Josh Washington and Kenzo Cotton raced to a facility record of 38.78 to win the 4-x-100-meter relay. The quartet’s performance ranks them at No. 2 in the NCAA, a mere .05 seconds behind Southeastern Conference rival Florida.
Event Winners
Junior Brandon Workman was the first individual event winner of the day, leaping to first place in the long jump with a mark of 7.58m/24-10 1/2. Along with Workman, redshirt freshman Brendon Rivera found success in the field, capturing the high jump title with a clearance of 2.10m/6-10 3/4. Junior Rubin Owens completed the Razorback sweep of the jumps, capping the afternoon with a first-place finish in the triple jump off a mark of 15.57m/51-1.
On the track the Razorbacks Larry Donald, Kemar Mowatt and Carlton Orange collected victories in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and 800, respectively. Mowatt finished right behind Donald in the high hurdles while Donald went on to finish as the runner-up to Mowatt in the intermediate hurdles. The only Arkansas entry in the 800, Orange bested the field by over three seconds, clocking a solid opening time of 1 minute, 48.28 seconds over two laps.
Additional Notable Performances
• Cotton clocks an NCAA top-10 time in the 100 (10.20) finishes second.
• Obi Igbokwe PRs in the 200 (20.64) finishes second.
Assistant Coach Doug Case Sounds Off
On overall team performance
“I think overall the weather conditions were a little rough with the wind, but if you look at what we did as a team we had a good track meet. We got things done that we need to do at our first open event track meet of the year and just had a great start to the season.”
On 4-x-100-meter relay NCAA top-two time
“We’ve never run that fast this early so I’m pretty encouraged by that time, especially knowing the way we develop throughout the season and get better and better. I always say to our guys ‘the four fastest guys are going to be on it period,’ and that’s what it’s going to be.”
On what’s to come
“We’ll come back and run some of our premier events with our premier athletes. Obi [Igbokwe] will be in the 400 and Eric Janise will probably run it again. You’ll see a lot of the sprinters back in their events and both relays will run again. Clive Pullen will open in the triple jump there and so will the rest of our jumps. We’ll have next weekend off so we expect to work hard over the next couple weeks and prepare for John McDonnell.”
