Kaylyn Brown's 49.17 is fastest ever Trials 400m semifinal

EUGENE – Arkansas freshman Kaylyn Brown produced a leading time of 49.71 seconds in the semifinal of the 400m during the second day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and established a bit of history while advancing to the final.

In the men’s shot put final, Ryan Crouser advanced to his third Olympic Games with a 74-11.25 (22.84) winning mark. Joe Kovacs finished second with a 73-7.25 (22.43) while Payton Otterdahl placed third 73-0.5 (22.26).

Daniel Spejcher placed 11 in the decathlon with a score of 7,654 points.

Brown, who has registered an incredible seven sub-50 times this season, became the first to ever generate a sub-50 time in the semifinals of the Olympic Trials 400m. Brown bettered the previous best of 50.06 by Rochelle Stevens in 1992.

The time by Brown ranks fifth best in Trials history and the 19-year-old has produced seven of the top 25 performances on the 2024 world list.

Joining Brown in the 400m final on Sunday are Alexis Holmes, who set a career best of 50.19 to finish third in the same heat with Brown. Shamier Little posted a 50.16 as runner-up in the second heat behind a career best of 49.81 for Kendall Ellis.

Runner-up in the third heat in 50.48 was Isabella Whittaker of Penn, who will join the Razorbacks in the fall semester. Rosey Effiong finished fifth in the same heat as Whittaker with a 50.92. Paris Peoples placed eighth in the first heat with a 52.68.
