Women’s Golf’s Comeback Comes Up Short vs. Texas A&M in Match Play

BELLEAIR, Fla. – The No. 8 Arkansas women’s golf team fell to Texas A&M, 3-1-1, in the quarterfinals of the SEC Championship match play. Kajal Mistry put the Hogs in a position for a comeback by tying the match at the seventh hole after being three down but came up just short.

Starting on the 10th hole, Miriam Ayora in the No. 1 spot helped the Hogs get on the board first. After a near eagle on the 18th hole, she was 2UP going into the front nine. Zoe Slaughter cut the deficit to one, but Ayora then won four straight holes from 2-5 to win the match in 14 holes and less than 3 hours. She picked up her first match play win at Arkansas and is now 1-1.

Maria José Marin fell 5&4 in her match. Adela Cernousek was 2UP thru the first four holes and then José Marin birdied 15. The Aggies then took a 4UP advantage going into the front nine, as José Marin fell in her first collegiate match play. Texas A&M tied up the match with Cernousek’s win.

Kendall Todd fell in her match, 4&3, as Texas A&M went 2-1 in the match. Todd went down after the 11th hole but tied it back up at the 15th hole. The junior then lost four holes to finish the match in 15.

Mistry put the Hogs in a position for a comeback after being down three thru 13 holes. The graduate started to catch fire, making three straight birdies to tie the match at the seventh hole after a tough bunker shot to set up for a birdie. Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio then made her putt at the eighth hole to go back up and Mistry’s putt for birdie and a tie for the match came up just short on nine.

Reagan Zibilski was tied with Jennie Park thru the back nine and then Zibilski went up 1 after a birdie on one. Park tied it back up on the next hole, but Zibilski went up by 2 after a birdie on six. With a chance for Zibilski to win the match on seven, Park answered with a birdie to continue play. The match ended in a tie, as Texas A&M clinched the match before the two teed off on nine.

The Hogs will await their fate for an NCAA Regional site on Selection Day on Wednesday, April 24. Arkansas can play at one of six locations for NCAA Women’s Golf Regionals from Monday, May 6 to Wednesday, May 8: Auburn, Alabama (Auburn University Club), Cle Elum, Washington (Tumblecreek Club), College Station, Texas (Traditions Club), East Lansing, Michigan (Forest Akers Golf Course), Las Vegas (Spanish Trail Country Club) and Winston-Salem, North Carolina (Bermuda Run Country Club).
