Razorback MGolf Finishes Day 1 at SEC T6th

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Arkansas men’s golf team finished round one of the 2024 SEC Championship with a 1-under-par score of 279 and stand in a tie for sixth.

The Championship, played at the par-70 Sea Island (Ga.) Golf Club – Seaside Course, will feature 18 more holes Thursday and a final 18 on Friday. The top eight teams after round three will advance to match play this weekend.

Vanderbilt (ranked 2nd nationally) turned in an 11-under 269 and leads the 14-team championship by one stroke over #23 Georgia (-10). Top-ranked Auburn is third (-6), followed by #22 Texas A&M (-4), #7 Tennessee (-3) the Razorbacks ( -1) and #15 Florida also at -1.

Arkansas got off to strong start and were tied for first at -7 midway through the opening round. Overall, Arkansas was third in the field with 16 birdies and Christian Castillo tied for the lead by playing the par 4s at -3.

Jacob Skov Olesen leads the Razorbacks at eighth (tied). The graduate senior is 2-under after carding an opening-round 68. Starting on hole 10, he was 2-under through 10 holes with birdies on holes 12 and 15. He dropped a shot on the par-4 2nd hole but rallied with a birdie on hole 4 to get back to -2. He finished his round with four pars.

Castillo is tied for 18th with a 1-under 69. He birdied his second hole, the par-4 11th but fell back to even with a bogey on the 13th.  He opened his back nine with birdies on holes 1, 2, 4 and 5 to get to 4-under. However, he suffered three-straight bogeys and parred his last for his 69.

Thomas Curry and Matthis Lefevre are tied for 35th, each shooting a 1-over 71. Curry Was =2 on his opening nine with two bogeys. He opened his inward with birdies on holes 1 and 2 only to bogey holes 3 and 4. He then birdied holes 6 and 8 buy dropped a shot on his final hole, the pr-4, 9th. Lefevre had a similar round in that he too was 2-over through 14 holes. He birdied holes 16 and 17 but dropped a shot on his 18th.

John Driscoll III played a key role in the Razorbacks’’ early success. After five pars to open his round, the graduate senior eagled the par-5 15 and birdies the par-4 16th. He was tied for the lead at -3 through 12 holes but ha a pair of double bogeys and a bogey over his final six holes for a 2-over 72 to stand in a tie for 46th.
