#13 Razorback MGolf 5th at Valspar After 36 Holes
PALM CITY, Fla. – The 13th-ranked Razorback men’s golf team fired a 2-under-par 282 in the morning and an even-par round of 284 in the afternoon to stand in fifth with a total of 566 after 36 holes of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, played at the par-71, 7,114-yard Floridian National Golf Club.
A trio of Razorbacks is among the top 20, including Christian Castillo (T3 at -5), Jacob Skov Olesen (T14 at -1) and John Driscoll III (T19 at even).
The 16-team field features 11 of the nation’s top 25 programs, including five of the top 10. #11 Florida State fired a 6-under-par 278 in the afternoon and leads with a 10-under-par total of 558. Wake Forest, ranked 36th, is second and six shots back with a total of 564 (-4). A pair of teams – #3 Vanderbilt and #4 Arizona State – are tied for third at 565 (-3), one stroke ahead of Arkansas at 566 (-2).
Rounding out the top 9 are #14 Oklahoma (-1), #1 North Carolina (+1), #23 Texas A&M (+5) and #6 Alabama (+10).
Castillo shot a season-low 67 in the morning session and was tied for fourth. He eagled his second hole of the day, the par-5 13th. He fell to 1-under through 11 holes before reeling off three straight birdies to get to -4. In the afternoon, Castillo had a pair of bogeys with three birdies to fire a 70 and jump one spot into a tie for third (137).
Olesen opened his day with a birdie on the par-4, 9th hole and finished his morning session with a total of five birdies and two bogeys for a 3-under-par 68. However, he started the afternoon session with a double bogey and was +5 with five holes to play. The senior rallied with three birdies and finished with a 2-over 73 to stand in a tie for 14th.
Driscoll was even par (142) after 36 holes, shooting a 1-over 72 in the morning and 1-under 70 in the afternoon. Manuel Lozada is tied for 44th. He posted a 75 for the first round and climbed 17 spots with an even-par 71 in round two. Thomas Curry is tied for 76th (79-73=152 / +10).
The final round (18 holes) of the Valspar Collegiate is set for Tuesday (Mar. 26).
