#20 Razorback MGolf Opens Spring Season Feb. 3

FAYETTEVILLE – After a successful fall season – earning four top-5 finishes in five events – the 20th-ranked Arkansas men’s golf team begins the spring portion of its 2019-20 schedule on Monday (Feb. 3) at the Sea Best Invitational, played in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., at TPC Sawgrass – Dye’s Valley Course (par 70, 6,790 yards).

The 13-team field includes seven of the nation’s top 60 programs, including #13 Texas A&M, #16 North Carolina, #20 Arkansas, #33 Liberty, #42 Florida, #47 Campbell and #56 NC State.

“I feel good about the squad,” said head coach Brad McMakin. “We return all the starters from last year and are coming off a very strong fall season. This is traditionally a tough golf course, especially this time of the year, but we’ve had success there, so the confidence is really good.”

SENIOR MASON OVERSTREET

This will be the Razorbacks’ fifth consecutive season to open the spring season at the Sea Best. Arkansas was runner-up in 2018. Luis Garza fired a 4-under 206 (67-69-70) and tied for fifth at the 2018 event and Mason Overstreet fired a second-round 65 en route to finishing eighth (207) that year.

The Razorbacks are ranked 20th in Golf Stat and 23rd by the coaches. Individually, senior William Buhl is ranked 46th in the nation by Golf Stat, sophomore Julian Perico is 57th and senior Overstreet is 179th. Rounding out the lineup will be seniors Tyson Reeder and Garza, while freshman William McDonald will play as an individual.

Buhl and Perico led the Razorbacks in the fall as each posted a scoring average of 69.87. Buhl repeated as the Gopher Invitational champion and was the only Razorback to finish among the top 20 in all five events. Perico had two top-5’s and led the team with eight rounds in the 60’s. He additionally is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Latin America Amateur Championship.

Overstreet finished the fall with a 70.93 scoring average. Last November, he finished third at the Sun Bowl All-America Classic and he was runner-up at the Patriot All-America Invitational in early January. Reeder and Garza each had a scoring average of 72.33 last fall.
