Razorbacks Ready for SEC Championship
FAYETTEVILLE – Fresh off its best performance of the season, the #36 Arkansas men’s golf team will look to ride that momentum into this week’s SEC Championship, played April 19-23 in St. Simons Island, Ga., at the par-70 Sea Island Golf Club-Seaside Course.
This is the 22nd straight year the SEC has hosted the championship in St. Simons Island and the 19th time at the Sea Side Course, including the 13th straight year at the course. Arkansas has reached match play in three of the five years under the current format of 54-holes of stroke play followed by the top eight teams advancing to match play.
Arkansas won the 1995 and 2019 SEC titles. In 2019, the Razorbacks were seventh after stroke play before taking down Vanderbilt, Texas A&M and Auburn in match play. Then freshman Julian Perico led the way with an eighth-place finish in stroke play and he was 3-0 in match play, including a win on the 18th hole to clinch the title.
Arkansas has three individual SEC crowns including Bud Still in 1995, Sebastian Cappelen in 2013 and then junior Segundo Oliva Pinto in 2021. In addition to his title, Oliva Pinto was 3-0 in match play as the Razorbacks finished runner-up.
Joining Perico and Oliva Pinto in the Razorback lineup will be Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira, Wil Gibson and Manuel Lozada with Christian Castillo serving as the alternate.
The format includes 18 holes of stroke play on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to determine the individual champion with the top eight teams advancing to match play. Match play quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Saturday, with the afternoon session being streamed on SEC Network Plus. The SEC team champion will be decided on Sunday with the Match play final, starting at 6:30 am (CT) with live coverage on SEC Network.
