Anacona Leads Arkansas In Round One
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – Freshman Ela Anacona fired a two-over 73, leading the No. 18 Arkansas women’s golf team to a first-round 300 and 9th place at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club on Friday.
Anacona finished strong with three of her four birdies coming on the back nine including the final hole of the round. She is just five shots back of the leader with two rounds remaining against one of the best fields Arkansas faces this year. The Razorbacks are +16 after Friday’s round but sit just six shots back of third place.
Anacona entered the second event of the spring leading Arkansas with a 71.92 stroke average through 12 rounds. She was the Razorbacks’ low finisher at the White Sands Invitational in the Bahamas in October.
Razorback Brooke Matthews posted a round-one 74 and is T21 followed by Julia Gregg who shot a 76 and its T42 overall. Maria Hoyos and Kajal Mistry both carded 77’s and are in the clubhouse T48 overall.
Seventh-ranked Wake Forest leads the field with a 3-over 287, followed by No. 14 UCLA with 292. No. 19 Auburn, No. 1 Texas and No. 20 Baylor round out the top-5 shooting 294 on Friday.
