Arkansas Back Home for Three Matches this Weekend
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team (5-2) returns to Billingsley Tennis Center this weekend to host Nebraska (3-1) on Friday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m. before a doubleheader on Sunday, February 2 against Wichita State (2-2) at 11 a.m. and Lamar (2-2) at 5 p.m.
The Razorbacks are back in action after finishing 1-1 at ITA Kickoff Weekend, where the squad fell to Georgia Tech in the opening match before defeating Rice in the consolation match. The Hogs dropped the doubles point in both matches last weekend after beginning the season by claiming the early advantage in their first five matches. Lukas Palovic continued his hot start to the year, winning both of his singles matches in straight sets at the No. 3 position to improve to 5-2 this spring.
Nebraska is off to a 3-1 start this season and recently split a pair of matches against then-No. 20 Arizona State and Santa Clara at ITA Kickoff Weekend in Lexington, Ky. The Huskers have also picked up victories over Drake and Bellarmine this year. Calvin Mueller has secured three singles wins in the top spot for Nebraska while Anton Shepp is 3-1 this spring on courts one and two. The Huskers have grabbed the doubles point in all four matches this season, with the duos of Leo Linquet/Joan Torres Espinosa and Mueller/Nikolay Sysoev each earning three victories.
Wichita State has started the year 2-2 and is coming off an undefeated weekend with home wins over Omaha and Drake. The Shockers are led by Vanja Hodzic and Alejandro Jacome, who are both 3-1 playing on courts one through three. Kristof Minarik has a 2-2 singles record competing at the No. 1 and 2 positions this spring. The tandem of Jacome and Minarik are currently 4-0 at the top spot in doubles play for Wichita State.
Lamar is 2-2 overall after two victories against Alcorn State last Saturday. The Cardinals will travel to Fort Smith, Ark. for a doubleheader on Saturday against Arkansas-Fort Smith before their match in Fayetteville on Sunday. Lamar is headlined by Fabian Anthin, Leon Nickel and Haruki Omori-Cowie, who have all competed on courts one through three in singles this season. The Cardinals are led in singles wins by Guy Dagan, Lukas Hamacher and Santiago Ledesma with each player recording two this year. Lamar has featured Anthin and Nickel at the No. 1 position in all matches this spring.
