Arkansas Defeats Purdue, Advances to Play No. 5 Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team (3-0) opened the ITA Kickoff Weekend with a narrow 4-3 victory over Purdue (3-1) on Friday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Razorbacks move on to face No. 5 Michigan tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. CT.
The Hogs continued their doubles dominance, bringing home the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Seniors Morgan Cross and Indianna Spink defeated Csilla Fodor and Kennedy Gibbs 6-0 on court one while senior Lenka Stara and junior Grace O’Donnell clinched the doubles point for the Razorbacks with a 6-4 victory. Senior Kelly Keller and sophomore Carolina Gomez Alonso’s match went unfinished with the score tied 4-4.
In singles, Arkansas climbed out to a 3-0 lead after wins on courts one and four from No. 59 Gomez Alonso and Stara. Gomez Alonso cruised past Fodor 6-0, 7-5, while Stara earned a straight-set victory over Juana Larranaga. Purdue’s Tara Milic and No. 113 Carmen Gallardo Guevara won on courts five and two, leaving the Boilermakers within one point of the Hogs.
On court three, Spink fell in a tight finish to Gibbs, 6-4, 4-6, 5-7, evening the score at three. The match came down to court six, where graduate Kacie Harvey faced off against Ashlie Wilson. Wilson took the first set 7-6 (3) while Harvey claimed the second set after a 7-5 win, forcing a winner-take-all third set. In the final set, Harvey pulled away early en route to a 6-2 victory, securing the match for the Razorbacks.
