Castillo Shares SEC Golfer of the Week Honors
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After his runner-up finish at this week’s Valspar Collegiate Invitational, Razorback senior Christian Castillo was named SEC co-Golfer of the Week along with Vanderbilt’s Matthew Riedel and Missouri’s Jack Lundin.
Castillo and Riedel tied for second in the stacked field at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational while Lundin was co-medalist at the Hootie and Bulls Bay with LSU’s Jay Mendell, who took home SEC co-Freshman of the Week honors.
Castillo fired rounds of 67-70-67 for a 9-under total of 204. The 67’s were his second-best rounds in a college event (shot 66 two years ago while at High Point) while his 204 total and 9-under in relation to par tied his career bests (also accomplished the feat two years ago at High Point). He led the field by playing the par 5’s at -11, including a pair of eagles.
Castillo made the lineup for just the second time in 2023-24 and produced his best result in his two years as a Razorback. He helped Arkansas finish fourth as a team, the program’s seventh top-4 finish in eight events this season, as the Razorbacks defeated nine teams in the NCAA top 36, including #1 North Carolina, #6 Alabama and #9 Texas Tech.
Entering the event, Castillo ranked 652nd in the NCAA and he beat 30 players among the NCAA top 100, including four of the top 10 and eight of the top 15, and finished behind #11 Luke Clanton (Florida State) and tied #52 Riedel (Vandy). With his impressive finish, Castillo jumped to 28th in the NCAA/Clippd rankings
Arkansas will close the regular season in Charlottesville, Va., at Virginia’s Lewis Chitengwa Memorial, April 8-9.
