Chris Bucknam named to 2026 Coaches Hall of Fame class

FAYETTEVILLE – Former Arkansas men’s head coach Chris Bucknam will be inducted into the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026.

Bucknam retired in December of 2025 after 18 years as men’s head coach with the Razorbacks. Prior to Arkansas, Bucknam served as head coach at Northern Iowa for 25 years.

Also in the Class of 2026 are Terry Aldridge, Mike Barnett, Sue Parks, Russ Rogers, and Ray Treacy.

Started in 1995, the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame exists to recognize coaches who have brought great distinction to themselves, to their institutions and to the sports of cross country and track & field. Each of the honorees exemplifies the qualities of dedication to the sport, leadership and passion for their profession and serves as an inspiration to coaches everywhere.

The induction ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 15 at the USTFCCCA Convention held in Grapevine, Texas, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center.

Bucknam will become the fourth Arkansas track and field coach to be inducted into the USTFCCCA Coaches Hall of Fame as he joins John McDonnell (1999), men’s head coach; Dick Booth (2012), men’s assistant coach; and Lance Harter (2014), women’s head coach.

During 18 seasons with the Razorbacks, Bucknam claimed a pair of NCAA Indoor championships while guiding Arkansas teams to a total of 18 NCAA top four podium finishes and 31 NCAA top 10 team finishes among cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

In addition to the pair of national championships, the Razorbacks were NCAA runner-up on six occasions while finishing in third and fourth place five times each.

Bucknam is one of seven University of Arkansas head coaches who have achieved a national championship across all sports. The list includes Frank Broyles in football, Nolan Richardson in basketball, John McDonnell in men’s cross country and track and field, Lance Harter in women’s cross country and track and field, Chris Johnson in women’s track and field, and Doug Case in men’s track and field.

Arkansas earned the USTFCCCA John McDonnell Program of the Year accolade five times under Bucknam since the award began in 2008-09.

In the 2024-25 season, the Razorbacks were the only men’s or women’s program to finish among the top four among the three NCAA Championships held as Arkansas placed third in cross country, fourth indoors and third outdoors. It marked the first time for a men’s program to accomplish the feat since Oregon in 2015-16.

Three Razorbacks accomplished the highest individual accolade within collegiate track and field in winning The Bowerman Award while Bucknam was head coach at Arkansas. The trio included Jarrion Lawson (2016), Jaydon Hibbert (2023), and Jordan Anthony (2024). An additional finalist for the prestigious honor included Ayden Owens-Delerme (2022).

Bucknam totaled 34 SEC team titles with the Razorbacks, earning 12 cross country, 12 indoor, and 10 outdoor championships. Arkansas achieved six SEC triple crowns under Bucknam and the Razorbacks claimed 14 of the past 17 conference meets contested from 2020 indoor to 2025 cross country.

Prior to taking over the Arkansas program, Bucknam led Northern Iowa teams to 35 conference championships, two top-10, and six top-20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He was named conference coach of the year 33 times at Northern Iowa and coached three individual national champions and 34 All-Americans who earned a total of 85 honors.

His time with the Panthers saw him lead the men’s program for 25 seasons and a combined track and field operation for the final 11 years. Bucknam’s career at Northern Iowa began as an assistant in 1979 before he assumed the head coaching job prior to the 1984 campaign.
