De'Arrius Howard Named to SEC Good Works Team
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior tailback De’Arrius Howard has been named to the Southeastern Conference Good Works Team. Howard was chosen for his participation in various community service and campus activities.
Each week, Jefferson-Pilot Sports highlights a representative of the 2005 SEC Good Works Team. Howard will be recognized on this weekend’s telecast of the Arkansas-Georgia game on Jefferson-Pilot Sports.
“We are proud of De’Arrius and the contributions he has made on and off the field during his career,” Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt said. “De’Arrius has a big heart. He always takes time to give something back to his community. He has managed to balance school, football and community service in a limited timeframe. That is an impressive accomplishment.”
The West Memphis, Ark., native has been active in the community since he arrived on campus. Howard has been a member of the APPLE (Athletic Prevention Programming and Leadership Education) Committee and attended the APPLE national conference as a UA representative in each of the past three years. He has joined other UA student-athletes in serving Thanksgiving dinner to residents of a local retirement center since 2001. He has been a regular participant in the Razorback for a Day program which matches underprivileged children with a student-athlete for a day of mentoring and fun.
He has been active in the Book Hogs reading program for three years. The program promotes reading among elementary school children including providing UA student-athletes to read for classes in Northwest Arkansas.
Earlier this fall, Howard traveled with other UA student-athletes to visit Hurricane Katrina evacuees at a shelter near Siloam Springs, Ark.
Howard participated in commencement exercises last spring and is currently finishing up his undergraduate degree in kinesiology.
