Fernandez de Oliveira Wins South America Am; 5 Hogs Finish in Top 20

FAYETTEVILLE – University of Arkansas junior Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira fired a final round 69 to hold off Razorback teammate and runner-up Segundo Oliva Pinto and win the 2022 South America Amateur Championship, played at the Quito Tennis and Golf Club in Quito, Ecuador.

Overall, the Razorbacks placed five among the top 20. In addition to Fernandez de Oliveira and Oliva Pinto, Julian Perico and Juan Camilo Vesga tied for seventh while Manuel Lozada, who missed all fall after an injury suffered in late August, tied for 20th.

Fernandez de Oliveira led after rounds one (68) and two (67). However, Oliva Pinto, who was second after day two, took the 54-hole lead with a 69, compared to Fernandez de Oliveira’s 73. Fernandez de Oliveira clinched the title with a final-round 69 and a 72-hole total of 277 (-11). Oliva Pinto turned in an even-par 72 in round four and finished two strokes back to place second (279; -9), four strokes ahead of third.

The quintet will now compete in the 2022 Latin American Amateur Championship, held Jan. 20-23 at Casa del Campo, Dominican Republic.

NOTES:

  • This was the third South America Amateur for Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira. He was runner-up in the last Championship held (2020) and was 13th in 2019.
  • Segundo Oliva Pinto was 13th in the 2020 South America Amateur.
  • Julian Perico fired the lowest round at the Championship. He carded a 7-under-par 65 in round three to jump from 27th to 7th.
  • Segundo Oliva Pinto fired the second-best round of the event with a 66 in round two.
