Gomez Alonso Earns Second SEC Freshman of the Week Honor
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After a perfect 4-0 weekend in league play, Arkansas’ freshman Carolina Gomez Alonso earns her second SEC honor of the spring, announced by the league office on Wednesday. The Razorbacks improve to 11-10 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
In singles play, Gomez Alonso helped to finish off the upset over No. 12 Auburn and clinched the win over No. 50 Alabama. Against the Tigers, she earned her third-ranked win against Auburn’s No. 44 Ariana Arsenault by coming back to force a third set in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Gomez Alonso finished off a perfect singles play weekend by clinching the win for Arkansas over Alabama for her sixth straight win. Gomez Alonso moved up to No. 44 in the latest ITA Rankings, boasting a 10-3 overall record this spring.
Gomez Alonso and partner Kelly Keller helped to secure the doubles point in both matches, making three straight doubles points for the Hogs. In the win over Auburn, Gomez Alonso and Keller were the clinching doubles court taking a 7-6 (5) tiebreak over their Tigers opponents. The duo improved to 7-6 this season with two wins over the weekend.
The Razorbacks head to Columbia, Missouri on Friday, April 14 for the regular-season finale before returning home to Billingsley Tennis Center as they host the 2023 SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament.
