Hogs Come Up Short Against No. 27 Vanderbilt on the Road, 4-3
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 40 Arkansas women’s tennis team (9-9, 2-6) fell just short of its first SEC road win against No. 27 Vanderbilt (10-5, 5-3), dropping the match 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Ensworth Tennis Facility.
In doubles play, the Commodores took the early advantage after a victory at the No. 1 position, as No. 33 Lee/Mohr defeated No. 36 Morgan Cross/Anet Koskel, 6-2. The Razorbacks responded with Lenka Stara/Grace O’Donnell earning a 6-3 win against Macavei/Ray on court two. The victory for Stara and O’Donnell ties them with the pairing of Cross and Indianna Spink for the sixth-most doubles wins in program history (32). The doubles point came down to court three as Kelly Keller/Carolina Gomez Alonso clinched the point for the Hogs after a 6-3 victory over Staff/Stevens.
Vanderbilt struck first in singles play with Staff defeating Cross, 6-4, 6-0, at the No. 4 position while Lee claimed a straight-set win against No. 112 Spink on court three. Arkansas answered with a victory in the top spot to tie the match, as No. 31 Gomez Alonso took down No. 11 Mohr, 6-3, 6-2, to earn the highest ranked win of her career.
The Commodores regained the lead following a straight-set victory from Ray over Keller at the No. 2 position. The Razorbacks evened the score again after a win on court five, as Stara bested Macavei, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The match came down to court six, where Kacie Harvey faced Amy Stevens. Stevens took the first set 6-4 while Harvey fought back to win the second set 6-4, forcing a winner-take-all third set. In the final set, Stevens pulled away late en route to a 6-4 victory, securing the match for Vanderbilt.
The Hogs are back in action on Sunday, March 31, at noon CT to face No. 63 Kentucky on the road at Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
